Buwan Ng Wika 2020 Calls For Bayanihan In Times Of Pandemic

August is Buwan Ng Wikang Pambansa, the celebration of our national language. This commemoration is significant to our culture as Filipinos, so despite the challenges 2020 has brought us, The Department of Education (DepEd) and Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) prepared stay-at-home and family-friendly activities that we can surely enjoy and participate in as one.

KWF is responsible for formulating plans, programs, and policies for the celebration. With their help, we’ll celebrate Buwan Ng Wika 2020 with the theme “Wika ng Kasaysayan, Kasaysayan ng Wika” and sub-theme “Ang mga Katutubong Wika sa Maka-Filipinong Bayanihan Kontra Pandemya”. The sub-theme is a response to what is happening in the country right now and the challenges the education sector is facing.

With respect to this year’s theme and sub-theme, both organizations released the official memo and poster that welcome the participation of students and families at home. You can find all the details below.

Main Objectives

Buwan Ng Wika 2020 implements the country’s Presidential Proclamation No. 1041, which states the responsibilities of government agencies and private sectors in celebrating our national language by raising awareness and civic consciousness. Great Christian Academy, for one, is tasked to show the importance of our national language through related activities and other school-wide efforts.

All Buwan Ng Wika activities this year should adhere to the theme and sub-theme. Most importantly, they must center around ‘Bayanihan’, a Filipino custom that refers to communities working together to help one another or reach an end goal.

Official Poster

From the creative minds behind KFW, this year’s poster features a wooden boat with three Filipinos paddling. According to KFW, the boat symbolizes our nation as a whole, while the three men are character representations of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

The image of three men paddling the boat to maintain stability means Bayanihan. The paddle itself, meanwhile, symbolizes the use of Filipino language to reach our end goals in a ‘fast, secure, and safe manner’.

Our theme and sub-theme for Buwan Ng Wika 2020 aim to be timely, relevant, and inspiring. As the COVID-19 pandemic threatens the country, Bayanihan can help bring out the brave spirit of Filipinos in the face of adversities.

Bayanihan starts with us. We are your boat, and we’ll help you maintain stability. Great Christian Academy is with you and your family in these difficult times, so tune in for more activities and announcements from us. Although we’ll only promote stay-at-home activities for parents and students, the COVID-19 pandemic won’t hinder our celebration of Buwan Ng Wika 2020. Let’s celebrate our national language month and promote national unity!
